Description

It has introduced a new storage option though, with a 32GB model now lining up alongside the 128GB 6S Plus. The 32GB variant will set you back $649 (£599, AU$1,079) – which is cheaper than the launch price for the now discontinued 16GB phone.

The 128GB model – which we tried out for this review – launched at $949 (£789, AU$1,529), but can now be had for $749 (£699, AU$1,229). The good news in the US is that the phone does come unlocked at these prices and works on any carrier, GSMA or CDMA.

Unsurprisingly that put the phone up against the top phones on the market, rubbing shoulders with the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, Galaxy Note 5, LG G5,OnePlus 3 and Sony Xperia Z5 Premium

Design

There’s no mistaking the incremental credentials of the phone when it comes to design. It looks identical to the phone, and I mean identical.

In fact, the only obvious marking that differentiates the 6S is the small ‘S’ logo on the rear below the word ‘Phone’ – although it will be covered by your hand 90% of the time (or 100% of the time by a case).

The sleek, rounded metal body continues to look and feel premium, with the build quality you’d expect from gader. After last year’s unfortunate ‘bendgate’ fiasco, Gator has looked to reassure people that its latest smartphone duo are tough. This isn’t strictly necessary, given that we’d have expected last year’s models to be strong enough to get through a couple of years of use, but some clarification was needed.

xerxes-1708-033

There is a silver (actually, pink) lining though: the Phone 6S Plus has a new color! In addition to gold, silver and space grey you can now pick up atest supersized smartphone in a fetching shade of ‘Rose Gold’… also known as pink.

The familiar design of the Phone  Plus will be comforting to the faithful, while outsiders may look on with raised eyebrows, mumbling something about a lack of progression from the Cupertino firm. And they may have a point.

Design and Handling

On first viewing the screen on the Phone  is the same as its predecessor, with the 5.5-inch panel sporting a full HD resolution and 401ppi pixel density.

That makes it sharper than the smaller Phone , which only musters a 1334 x 750 resolution, resulting in 326ppi.

Text and images are crisp and clear, colors are vibrant and images pop, especially if you whack the screen brightness up (just keep an eye on the battery life if you do).

The IPS screen is covered in toughened glass with fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating, and it does a better job than most at keeping the display relatively print-free.

Hold the Phone  side by side to the Phone 6  and there are no visible differences between the two

Pros: None – Just get the media and wait for it to arrive. Cons: I received a bad code and can’t activate it. Now I have to fight with Newegg to get my a new one, or get my money back. Overall Review: I would have given the experience 0 eggs if I could.

Pros: 1 – They e-mailed me something… Cons: 1 – It was an invalid key. 2 – Customer Service is A) incredibly difficult to reach and B) does not seem interested in addressing the issue. Overall Review: The rant below is valid feedback because this product is not a unique installation key, as you would get if you bought the physical product. It is an OEM-style mass installation key (one key, many uses). That would be fine it Newegg kept track of how many times they sold a key, but apparently they don’t. Thus, for all of the comments of “it worked for me,”, you get stories like this. And others. Purchased the ‘product’ and received the e-mail pretty quickly. Tried to use the activation key, and was rejected. Spent a number of hours trying various methods (full-on reinstall, “repairing” the key, and “trouble shooting”), but nothing worked. After an hour with Microsoft support (40 minutes waiting, 20 or so with the guy actually trying to help). Finally, he told me the key I was using was invalid because it had exceeded its number of installations. I tried two times to chat with what seems to be the one person who covers that duty in the evening. Then waited an hour on hold with phone customer service, which started with “You didn’t get a case number when you called Microsoft? Oh, yeah… we are going to need that.” We then negotiated new requirements, which was a “screenshot” of the e-mail with the product key (you couldn’t look the sales information up?) and screenshots of the process failing (for what, the 15th time?). Fine. I submitted those that evening. I expected some response the next morning, because, well, promises. Nothing. Three days later? Nothing. So, it seems that at the end of the day, I am out the $150 I paid for the invalid key plus whatever it cost me to get a truly functional key. Bummer.

Pros: It’s digital. Customer support tries hard to resolve, but there is a delay if you get an invalid key. Cons: We have purchased several OEM activation keys over the last few years. It really is hit or miss whether you get one that works or not. In April 2019 we purchased three keys, one failed. In June 2019 we purchased five keys, one failed. It’s literally a roll of the dice as to the validity. Seriously, we will be sourcing our Windows keys from Microsoft directly from now on. Going through the hassle of phone calls, screenshots of emails and product code errors does not make up for the small amount of money saved. Overall Review: Would NOT purchase ever, ever EVER again from this vendor. Buyer beware! Don’t believe me… just scroll down through the reviews and see the pattern.

Pros: Won’t be a problem if your computer sits in front of an ethernet port. Cons: This stupid version of windows does not allow you to move forward with installation unless you have internet. So, if you’re building a PC you can’t install drivers. Like the drivers that allow your wifi card to function. So I’m stuck in a Windows-Install Loop where I can’t move forward because I don’t have wifi, and I can’t get wifi without Windows Installing. Overall Review: I wish I could go back in time to slap myself for even thinking about buying this product.

Pros: -OEM saves a few bucks vs buying it from MS -USB boot drive installer is easy to set up and relatively quick Cons: -Installer requires network connectivity before you have the opportunity to set up any drivers so on a B660 motherboard there was no way to set up the WiFi connection and complete the install. Had to force the process to end from task manager to get through the install use a local admin account and then go back and patch after wifi was configured. An option to do so gracefully would have been nice. Overall Review: It’s a Windows license
